In 2022 Rashid Uri was invited by the HPO collective and Bill Kouligas to collaborate on RAM, a performative installation in a 350-meter tunnel beneath the tracks of Milan Central Station. RAM focuses on shredding as a source of sound and music.
In Tunnel 40, crude and noisy shredders take the place of sophisticated robots. The machines are activated at specific times of the week to grind waste materials collected while cleaning fourteen other railway tunnels before Fuorisalone. The materials are sorted, shredded, archived and cataloged for the next phases of the recycling chain.
The machines also process the remains of Nike’s DiSPAssembly Park installation, visible in Tunnel 42 at the end of Milan Design Week, giving it a new physical function and a new symbolic value. In line with the principles of iSPA (Improve, Scavenge, Protect, Adapt), the demolition of DiSPAssembly Park is reworked into a disassembly soundscape composed by Bill Kouligas.
Performative destruction is carried out by mechanisms and human bodies under the same underground vault.
