compound is an installation by Rashid Uri at Edicola Radetzky, a newsstand in Milan, in 2020. It is a cage and a refuge: austere tools for survival reflect simple human needs and feelings, charged by the constant search for the limit of human survival.
Inspired by Chinese compounds, closed and fortified architectural systems, the project turns the newsstand into a place of refuge. Essential objects are placed in the limited size of the exhibition space, and a non-flexible survival system is outlined.
The polyester coat Das Schloss is an ontological representation of the human figure and a medium for escaping the confined space. The title of the sculpture comes from the novel by Kafka of the same name. In German, Schloss means castle or palace, and also closure; phonetically it recalls schluss, end or conclusion.
